Medical Assistants are important members of many health care teams. Medical Assistants typically perform both clinical and administrative tasks that keep the offices of physicians and other health care practitioners running smoothly. The exact duties of medical assistants will vary by employer, depending upon the specialty of the practitioner, and the location and size of the practice.
Administrative office responsibilities may consist of processing insurance forms, billing, and bookkeeping; updating and filing medical records; scheduling appointments and arranging for hospital admissions; and more. Clinical duties will vary according to State law. They may range from assisting in medical procedures, interviewing patients, taking medical histories and vital signs, to collection of laboratory specimens and providing basic patient instructions and all such duties are under the direction and supervision of a licensed health care provider. Content of the certification exam includes medical office management, medical terminology, pharmacology, anatomy & physiology, and medical procedures.
Medical Office Assistants typically perform administrative duties for health care providers in office settings, although some may also perform basic clinical tasks (as allowed by state laws). Their responsibilities will vary by employer, but may include answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing medical records, completing insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, and assisting with billing or bookkeeping. The certification exam content includes medical office procedures, medical insurance and billing, basic clinical responsibilities, medical/legal foundations, and medical terminology.
Patient Care Technicians perform routine tasks under the supervision of nursing or other medical staff. They typically work in health care facilities (e.g. hospitals, residential care facilities) rather than in private medical offices, and some may work as home care aides. Their main focus is to assist patients with activities of daily living (bathing, eating, walking, and dressing) and they may assist with other procedures. They are vital members of interdisciplinary health care teams because of their direct patient care involvement.

Pharmacy Technician
Pharmacy technicians work in a variety of locations. According
to a 2002 United States
Department of Labor report, about
two-thirds worked in retail pharmacies, both independently owned or part of a drugstore, grocery store or mass retailer chain. An additional 22% of pharmacy technician jobs were in hospitals, while a small portion worked in mail-order or Internet pharmacies, clinics, pharmaceutical wholesalers, and the Federal Government.Responsibilities of a pharmacy technician differ depending on location. In many operations, they may manage assistants or do the work of pharmacy aides: answering telephone calls, handling money, stocking shelves, and computer data entry, among other odd jobs. In a hospital, these jobs will be the responsibility of a pharmacy assistant and the Technician will have roles of higher responsibility. Pharmacy technicians who work in a hospital, nursing home or assisted-living-type facilities have additional responsibilities. In many circumstances, they will read patient charts in conjunction with a prescription, verified by both a physician and a pharmacist, before preparing and physically delivering medicine to nurses, who administer it to patients.

The role of the technician is likely to increase in the next few years, as more pressures are put on pharmacists to be available to consult and advise patients, rather than to simply dispense. Certified Pharmacy Technicians are skilled workers in the field of allied health. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Pharmacy Technicians earn salaries approximate to those in other entry level allied health positions, such as surgical techs, LPN's, and physical therapist assistants.
